Check compression first. If it's down, nothing else you do will matter.

A stock 88 is pretty powerful so it could be worn out. If its not and you are looking for more power for the farm, or for some pulling, there are a few things you can do. M&W pistons with an oversized bore will help. I have never done it, but am told that 1650 parts will interchange, and the 1650 manifold, cam, and maybe head will help even more. A guy i talked to says his 88 that he uses on the farm dynos at 75 hp. Not sure if its true, but with a little work an 88 is awful powerful.

How much is it down? Depends on the internal condition of the engine - may need new rings or even pistons and sleeves. A valve job might be needed. The timing may need checking. The fuel system may need some overhaul. The bottom end may be in need of overhaul if all the above are done and the crank is worn near to limits.
Btw is it a gas, diesel or a kero burning engine? It is rated around 38 HP with around 29 at the drawbar. Should be enough power for most jobs you ask of it, but you may need ballast in the tyres to use all the power, depending on traction available.
Hope this helps, but I think I may have avoided answering what you think you asked.
Regards, RAB
