I posted this message a while back, I got sound the advice earlier, but still can't resolve my problem, I have a 1958 770 that I cannot get to turn up past 16-1700 RPM. I have pulled the govenor, no noticable wear, bearing, weights and bumper all seem to be in good shape. I have adjusted the linkages (both) and even tightened the throttle spring by drilling a new hole and adding more tension. Problem is... If I get it to idle @ 5-600 rpm I can only get 1400-1500 rpm high no load speed, with adjustment I can get the high speed up to 1800 rpm but it won't idle below 1000 rpm. Still working out the the bugs as far tune-up goes. Is it possible this is a carb or even an ignition problem? Rebuilt carb is acting finicky (float sticks, then does'nt)new points, plugs, wires & dist. cap. What am I missing? Feel like I'm looking right at the problem and can't see it.
By the way tractor is new to me, had sat outside for about 5 years, not stuck but suffered from the elements. Got it running immediately by putting on the carb off my 66 and scuffing up the dist. and points. Since then all that is now new, just won't turn up. (New gauges as well)Sorry for the long and rambling post. I asppreciate any help!!

What do you have for a carb???....Is the linkage opening up the carb without binding???

Thanks for offering the additional help. Sorry but I don't know the website you mean, I only have computer access during the day. Just a little extra info. the carb is a rebuilt Schebler from Tom @ Obrien Co Imp.,the original was absoluted destroyed by rust. The throttle linkage was also bad but I was able to salvage the rods and used new ends and a new "ball and socket connection"?(not sure what that is called) from Mcmaster Carr. The carb was rebuilt when i got it and I'm still struggling to get the float/needle valve right. I just got the hydraulics and PTo back together (cracked center plate/ bad seals) and I was hoping to put the tractor on the baler this weekend. (Before another 3 day rain from Ivan.)Sorry for the long post again. I'll be in and out of the office today, see my e-mail address and hopefully we can get in touch. thanks again for your help.

Can't tell what you are "adjusting". If it's the linkage, then the linkage is wrong/worn/misadjusted. If it's the load screw on the carburetor then I'd say the carb is the wrong carb, has wrong float level, wrong jet, etc.

Just because the governor parts look good doesn't mean they are. A service manual would be a big help to you.
