Dave: You didn't tell us if it is a HC (gas), LP or Diesel. All 77 gas and LP were 6 volt positive ground and the Diesel was a 12 volt system again positive ground from the factory. The diesel had two 6 volt batteries wired in series (Positive to negative between batteries). The switch was made from generator to alternator at the beginning of the "50" series production. Think about the assembly line, they didn't want to order both and have to switch for models. The 550 & 770's were chaged at the same time.

Look at the battery and see if the + is connected to the frame or the starter. + to the frame is positive ground. Look at the battery and count the fill caps. Each cap is 2 volts. 3 would be 6 volt and 6 would be 12 volt of course. If there isn't a battery in it gen and alts are usually stamped or marked as per there charging voltage. Also, you can take a different battery, doesn't matter voltage, and see which cable goes on which terminal. The positive and negative posts are different size. One will go right on and the other way you'll have to open the clamp to get it on(not the way it was wired last battery install).

All of the fleetlines are 6 volt unless they have been converted. Now I am guessing that someone could put a 12 volt battery and genereator off of a newer model on one. My 1800 has a 12 volt generator that could be switched to an older tractor. If I remember right the '50 series is where Oliver started using an alternator. However it should be stamped on the tag on the geneerator.
