I have a 1958 770 rowcrop that I just picked up. It had sat for about 5 years. Got it running, installed new gauges and in the process of other repairs. Problem is I cant' get the govenor to allow it to turn up past about 1500 rpm. I ahve adjusted the control linkage and I only get an rpm increase of about 900-1000 rpm. If I adjust the linkage I can get 18-1900 rpm, but it wont' idle back down below 1000+-. Opening the throttle by hand will make it turn up, can't get the govenor to allow the high no load speed. I'm stumped, any suggestions. I'm fairly familiar w/ the setup as I also have a 1950 66 rowcrop. Sorry for the long post.(carb is also rebuilt)

Double check to see how many active coils you have in the spring. If I remember correctly you need 19. Remember the old rule, spring tension increases speed, centrifugal force from the weights take the speed away.

I forgot to ask have you had the weight assembly out and checked the condition of the thrust bearing, washer and pivot pins?

Thanks for the response, I've got good spring tension and no i haven't been inside the govenor yet, i was hoping that there may be something about the linkage or something simple i was missing. i guess I was just being lazy. I also have the tractor somewhat disassembled so i can't get it out and put it under load yet. Just got it rewired and running late last night, so there are still things to go through, thanks again!
