Hi,
Thanks in advance for any help. I"m new to Olivers and just bought it. Its a 1955 diesel and I have a couple of questions. What should the engine oil pressure be, Is it normal for an Oliver to make a gear noise when going fast in higher gears it a whirring noise no clunks or rattles, seems to work fine. Also, it"s been converted to a key start to turn the starter motor but still has the lever on the right side to enguage the bendix. What what was originally there to start instead of an ignition key and what would be required to convert all the over to a key start so I don"t have to mess with enguaging the bendix? Last, is the Oliver green paint that TSC sells close the right color or should I find a better source? A lot of questions and thanks again for any help.

How much oil pressure do you have? 15-20 psi at rated speed is great. Is your oil filter base aluminum or cast iron? They were changed to key start with the 1957 model year. The lever is how it starts. I have not figgured out why you have key ignition unless someone took the generator off and added an alternator. Questions?

Slide down the page to where the man asked about the compression on the Super 88 Diesel. Same specs.

Thanks for all the information - I get more and more questions as I get to using this thing. It starts hard hot or cold runs great after it starts and seems to have good oil pressure but does have light colored smoke not noticiable at idle but when you get her going it's very slight. Watching the exhaust it's not a constant stream but a puff like it's coming from one cyclinder. The tractor has done alot of sitting the past couple of years could it be a valve not closing all the way? or just a tired engine. Is checking the compression going to help - What is the best way to check compression - do I need to pull the injectors? Thanks Again!

Hi Ken I too am new to the Oliver clan and have recently purchased a 550. My tractor runs great but I took it to a mechanic friend that noticed the same thing that you discribed ( Slight engine puff of coloured smoke at higher RPM'S) He tells me that at some time I may want to get the injectors worked on that in his option that is the problem. Take it for what it is worth.

I am also looking for a tack drive and a rocker assembly for my 550 too. If you can help I would appreciate it!

Thanks and good luck! R. Crandell( Desperate in Ontario Can. )

Hi, It was converted to an alternator so it sounds like there was something on the generator that allowed to entire starting process to happen from the push switch on the right? What would I have to do to make it correct or at least make it where it runs completely from the key - instead of turning the key while pushing the starter switch at the same time. I'm glad to hear about the oil presuure I have 20 just seemed low when compared to others I was used to. Thanks for the reply!

You"d need to change the starter to a 55 diesel with the pushbutton on it. As it happens, I have a 55 diesel with a pushbutton starter, and I"m looking to go to key switch. Want to trade? My starter is off a 55, and would be correct for your tractor.

I may take you up on that I'm not sure exactly what I'm going to do with the tractor.
