I have a 1958 770 with a noisy transmission. It sounds more like a rattle. It only does it in gears 3, 4, 6, and R2. I assume it is a bad bearing. Anybody out there run into this or have any solutuions?

I have reasonable mechanical abilities. Have had these tractors apart but never needed to get into the tranny. We also have an 880 that jumps out of gear but that is for another day.

Thanks in advance.

My 770 has a very pronounced gear howl when moving. It has not changed in over 15 years. I now run a semi-synthetic 75w-90 gear oil and limit the tractor to the rake and post pounder duties. It sounds to me like you have a loose fork or something of that sort. A bad bearing should get noiseier under load or change in pitch at different speads. It is a very simple looking gear box I doubt that it would take much mechanical apptitude to work on it.

You leave alot of room for thinking about the problem. Does your tractor have a power booster? Will it make the noise in the high neutral since you say it does it in all the gears that are in the high neutral? Does it do it in low neutral? Have you taken the hydraulic unit off and looked in there ( Remember to pull the PTO shaft out first) Can you (and this is a little tricky to do ) position the neutal shift rail so neither high or low neutral is engaged If you get that done and your noise does not go away look for worn bearings on the top shaft. Both bearings are ball bearings and they do wear. I have also seen pitting and chipping of the double gear and the corresponding high range gear on the countershaft. What are you using for transmission fluid?

The rattle might be nothing more serious than a worn or bent shift fork. You should be able to see any serious issues without a teardown. Look to see if the gear lube has suspended filings. If it does, you have something serious going on. But you should feel the rattle through the shifter too.

I have been inside of a number of different makes of transmissions, but not yours specifically, and if you do dive into either one or both, the things to invest in that usually do not get mentioned, is the usual expanding ring pliers, a sharpie and vaseline, and if you do not have a Polaroid or digital camera, get one.

Take pictures of the unit internals with special attention to which way the shift forks are positioned as sometimes they only go in facing one direction and it is never marked. Do this before any dismantling of the transmission, and take pictures as you go along.

Vaseline holds loose needle bearing in place very well and disolves in gear lube, and there will never be any significant gaps within the needle bearing when you reassemble- if there appears to be some room for almost one more needle or roller, there is room for one more needle or roller and it just needs some patience and persistence.

Noisy 770 Tranny; JM has laid out the tranny dive process in a very practical and logical manner.
Sounds like a good winter project if you have a heated area to do the fine work. Document step by step image after image its the only way to go.
Good luck.
