I"m new to tractors and hoping someone could tell me how to identify a certain Oliver I found. On each axle it says "Oliver" and "Row Crop" in large letters cast in the the axle housings. It had a large straight 6. It looked like it Delco Remy type starter and generator. It had a dashboard with several gauges as well as a light. I could not locate an ID plate. Is there somewhere I should be looking for a serial number to tell me the model and year?

Beginning in the fall of 1952 the serial nnuber plate was attached to the lower part of the dash. For the models 77 & 88 tractors built before that the serial number is attached to the transmission case on the right side near the right brake petal. If it is a model 70 the serial number will be on the left side of the engine block. Also look behind the starter and see if you have casting numbers. Find these get back with us and we will have a starting point.

No dash plate or any sign of one having been there. On the right side, high on the block, just below the head I found "2 24 49" upside down. This is an overhead valve engine. I is this a car engine? It reminds me of an old Chevy straight 6.

I also found a number above the starter on the block. 185220 M100. It doesn"t seem to match with the serial numbers listed for the Row Crop 60, 66, 70, 77, 80, or 88.

You will not have the plate on the dash. Your plate should be mounted on the right side of the transmission case on the right side near the brake petal right under the top of the platform. You have a 1949 Rowcrop 77 Oliver and it has a Oliver engine. Questions?

This discussion has been an invaluable help to me. I have what I think is a 1952 Oliver 77 RC with a missing dash data plate and precisely the same numbers (185220/M100) on the block behind the starter. The inverted numbers on the RH front block side are 1 4 52. But how can I verify that it's really a 77? Do the block numbers mean it's a 77? "Row Crop" appears on the axle housings but I've been unable to positively identify the tractor from pictures. The PTO housing is shattered and the PTO is on the ground, so I need the info in order to locate parts (I have PTO pix). All help is appreciated.
