I'm starting to look for a good tractor to pull the 8-30 no til white 6100 planter I bought. Figure I'll need 90 HP plus. I've been thinking from an 1850 to a White 2-135. The planter dosen't have fert. boxes, but I am considering them.
Any suggestions? Thanx, Larry

A buddy of mine used to pull one with a 1650 gas and now uses a 2-85. He has a 7000 with no fert, also in northern IL

We used to pull a White 5100 8-36 no-till planter, with a 2-135 White. It had dry fertilizer boxes on the planter and saddle tanks on the tractor and it pulled no problem. JLC

Forgot to mention that this is in the rich black soil of North Central Iowa.

No Till or not? Are you thinking no till drill down the road? The 8 row here is odd. Most are either 6 or 12 row. Most 12 row planters have about 120 horse power and then they use the same tractor on the no till 15 foot drill

I pull a 4-30 with a 1655 with absolutely no effort. Ground is basicly flat and loamy. I have also watched a 4-38 be pulled by a 1550 on hilly clay ground easily (no smoke). If you have hilly, heavy soil you might need a 1750/55 for 6-30 otherwise I would go with a 1655 or even a 1550/55.

It depends on slope speed and soil type ie soft peat or similar. I would think a 1850 or larger would be suffecient. I pulled my 6-30 5100 with full fertilizer, herb and seed with my 77 diesel with duals on gentile rolling ground ok in 3rd gear good conditions but every situation is different sticky soil and I'm sure I would of run out of power. Good luck.

For best in fuel, get a White 120. Then you will have the Cummins engine with a fully enclosed cab. That would handle your planter needs:)

Thanks for the suggestions. In the 70's I used to plant with a JD 494-4row with a 77, no problem. Just thought I'd need more with the no til.
A cab is a must. Should be like a good woman; gives you shade in the summer and warmth in the winter!!:) Larry
