What would cause my 550 to pop out of gear while going downhill? I am used to it now, but it scared the heck out of me the first couple of times!

You could have a chipped off tooth also. Our neighbor had a 550 that jumped out of 2&4th gear(same gear, different range) and that was the problem, broken tooth on gear.

My 550 did the same thing several years ago. I took it to a tractor shop and they tore down the transmission. There was a part of the shifter mechanism that a nut had come off of. I don't remember what the mechanism was called but it and the nut had left handed threads. I found the mechanism at a junk yard but the nut was missing. I had to order the nut and it cost close to 100 bucks. Hope this helps.
