I need to clean up the threads out the top of the exhaust manifold on my 88 that lead to the muffler. I think that they are 2" pipe, but I am not certain. The old pipe when it rusted out has left the thread pretty well filled in and so I can't measure them. Any help with information would be greatly appreciated as I do not want to mess the threads up when I try to fix them. Thanks. Troy

If you can get all of the old pipe out, get a 2" pipe nipple and grind 3 or 4 slots in the threads (parallel to the pipe) with a side grinder. This will make a cheap and suitable tap for cleaning out the threads. Use plenty of oil and back it out about every 1/4 turn.

Makeshift thread cleaner; Good idea I am gonna give this a try on some smaller diameter situations.

The RealRon and J are correct. I have performed this maneuver a few times myself. If you have a torch, heat the remains of the exhaust pipe up with the torch, then reach in there with pliers (needle nose if necessary) and pull out what you can with the pliers. You should be able to get alot of the old exhasust. Get it orange before you start pulling out old exhaust pieces. Then take it to a good machine shop and have them "chase" the threads. They will not be happy about using a good tap on those threads, but if they have an old tap they will use it. That has been my experience anyway. Good luck!!

Find a plumber who will have the correct tap. You want to soak the threaded portion of the manifold with PB Blaster and clean as best you can with a steel wire brush first.

Use anti-seize when you put it back together.
