Ok, someone compare a 77 noise to a 9N whine. in reply to Thomas, 08-12-2004 20:41:30
My 9N is WAAAY louder than my 77. Opinions from you folk on noise comparisons would help me figure if either is right. Loren

Kerwin is right, most of the old ones whined pretty loudly. Even my 1959 880 has straight cut gears and it really sings in 6th gear.

Somebody can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think some transmission noise is normal from these Olivers because of their straight cut gears. I have an 88 RC that puts out a pretty good whine as well when moving along. I think that spherical gearing came in at some point on the 770s, 880s. Hope this helps.

770's had straight cut gears. The later 880's had the helical cut gears. The straight ones will whine from wear, common on the 77's. Keeping the fluid up in them really helps.
