Can anyone tell me what would cause a head to crack on my 1650 Oliver with a 283 Waukasha Diesel? It is an Lonova indirect injection. The cracks are between all the valves and across the injector tunnels. The head was replaced new about 5 years ago and all the injectors were rebuilt. Also where can I get a new head for the tractor? Thanks.

Take it to a good machine shop and have them pressure check for leaks. Most any dsl head has a crack, just have to determine if it hurts any or not.

I have one off of an 880 that is good, but to reiterate, I would have the one I have pressure checked.

Its worked hard; Overworked, over temperature, spider cracks appear to be the norm, and if you could backup the clock 15 years and double the cooling system efficiency maybe these recently discovered problems would be less or non-existent.
Fix?, retire or look for a stronger beast out there. Good luck.

Dick's right. I rebuilt a JD 4430 ten years ago becuse it broke the insert out of a piston. As a part of the routine, I had the valves ground and had the head magnufluxed, It had so many little cracks it looked like a fat ladys legs with little spider veins. But--none of them were leaking. I suspect it was just normal aging of the casting. A good machine shop can pressure test it on the bench. Jim.

Is your old head leaking ? If not put it back on all the olivers with that fuel system have cracks .Some cracks are not important.

The engine was either overheated or lacked freeze protection. Based on your description, it's the former.

New heads are not available. You might find a used one in a salvage yard. Problem is, short of a magnaflux, it might not be any better than what you have.
