We just tore down our 50 and the crankshaft is BAD.I do know of an old 40 that we could get for parts.Does the 230 have the same crank as the 273?Also what else uses the 273? I have heard some Allis Chalmers tractors and combines did is this correct? Thanks for your time

The 40 and 50 both have 4 1/8" stroke. The crank out of a 262 AC engine is a 4 3/8" stroke. Camshaft will have to be changed. It is relieved in the 262 engine for the extra stroke. Go to the tractor pulling discussion board and search the archives under COCKSHUTT and there was quite a bit of info about changing the cranks.

Hank,

The Cockshutt 40 and 50 with Buda engines (40,6B-230 and 50, 6B273) use the SAME crankshaft. The later AC G-230 and G262 crank will work with some modifications. Perhaps others on this site can detail the modifications for you. The engine blocks are DIFFERENT between the B-230 and B-273. The B-230 has removable sleeves, the B-273 does NOT. Both engines appear the same externally and both install exactly the same in the tractor.

I am sure the block is the same, but I think the crank on the 273 has a longer stroke. The 230 and 262 use the same crankshaft.

Wrong! Cranks are the same, blocks are different.

OK, just saw the other post and see the 273 has no sleeves. Wonder how far it can be bored and if it fits a AC chassis????

273 engine is a parent bore design. 230 and 262 have wet sleeves. Archives in tractor pulling has it you can punch a 273 to 4" bore. Not going to do it to mine. Just going to stroke it.
