I was at a fellows farm today about an hours drive away and he had a Cockshutt 30 parts tractor sitting out back. Friend of mine happens to need a set of brake drums for a model 30 and this parts tractor has a set. Problem is that I didn't have a 2 1/2" socket with me (don't normally carry one of those) so I'm going back to pull off the drums. Couple of questions .... first, if the tractor is in gear then the drums should hold solid when I wrench on the big nut is that correct (tractor rims are in the ground so the tractor's not going anywhere)? Or will I need a strap wrench to hold the drum when I use the big wrench?

Alberta Mike,

NOT ALL COCKSHUTT 30 BRAKE DRUMS ARE THE SAME. BE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE BEFORE REMOVAL. YOU STILL MAY NOT KNOW BECAUSE SOME HAVE DIFFERENT INTERNAL SPLINES.
LET ME KNOW IF YOU NEED MORE INFO. OR BETTER YET LET ME KNOW THE SERIAL NUMBER OF YOUR TRACTOR.

Hello Phil, I have a Cockshutt 30 parts diagram/description manual here that shows a number of different (4) drums (part numbers) with the same diagram. One number goes up to serial number 10000, then another from 10001 up to 26200. Then another 26201 to 27689. Then another number from 27690 and up. Would that mean there are possibly 4 brake drum designs or assemblys? I have removed the hide on my email so you can email me directly if you wish. Thanks.

I will try to round up both serial numbers but it won't be right away. Didn't think of that yesterday when I was out there. I can get the one from my friends 30 who needs the drums no problem, the parts tractor I would need to take a special trip. I'll eventually get back to you.

What you discribed will work. Also take a chisel and hammer or an over size socket as most of the time the nut has been chiseled on and off and will have burs that may not let the socket on with out a grinder. They are usually loose enough to just tap off the same way. Irv
