Cockshutt or CO-OP?

I have a Cockshutt tractor of my grandfather's and we are starting to resore it. While we are working on the tractor we see lots of orange paint under the red paint and also the plate on the front grill says CO-OP. I am starting to think this tractor may have been a CO-OP. Does anybody know how to tell? I have the serial number, but that does not seem to help with the identification.

In the early years (1946-1949) cockshutt was marketed as cockshutt in Canada. Also at that time Gamble-Skogmo sold them as Farmcrest 30. And also at that time differant co-ops sold them as Co-op E 3. Cockshutt and Farmcrest were Red and yellow. Co-op E 3 was orange. They are all the same, except for the name plate in the grill.
If you have one that is red and the name plate says co-op, chances are it has been repainted Red
or a new name plate put on the grill. I repainted many co-ops to Red and yellow because Cockshuut set up Dealers in the U S. I was a service man for many years and later was a Dealer.

Lots of shenanigans over the years- I have a Cockshutt 35 (there never were any Coop 35's)- under the tasteful mop-applied pink, it was orange, and red under that. Think it had a serious identity crisis over the years, but hope to rectify it with a good dose of lye gravy and a Cockshutt Deluxe paint job.

A lot of tractors delivered to the US were Orange COOPs and then painted Cockshutt colors. My dad got a 40 Cockshutt like that. I am redoing a 40 Cockshutt now and have found some orange paint under all the goo. I have heard some of the primers were orange, but do not know that for sure. It is a shame they did not record some kind of a serial number difference, but they did not. If your Grandfather called it a Cockshutt, if it were mine, it would be red and yellow when I was done.

You can't tell from the serial number. Cockshutt didn't separate them in their record keeping. If it was orange and the name plate says Co-op, I would say that is what it was.

I am not sure that the name plate came from this tractor for sure. My grandfather would have bought this tractor brand new and my father does not remember the being a CO-OP and my grandfather always called it a Cockshutt. The orange paint under the red the thing that really makes me think it was actually a CO-OP.

Yes...I am located in Somerset County (actually in Rockwood). My father is Terry and my grandfather was Ray. Is your father from this area or is he familiar with this area. I am interested.....

What year is the tractor? I know of one case in particular where the tractor arrived as a Coop and at that point in time the dealer would paint the tractor as a Cockshutt. Remember the first ones in the states if sold by the Coops were Badged as a Coop. However that changed and I think and Irv or Phil will probably laugh at my poor memory, but I think this happened in the winter of 52-53.
