Well I've got the compression up now and it runs good, but it get hot very hot. Do these engines have a thermostat? Oh by the way the tag on the engine says its a IXF, is this even the correct engine, it does have a water pump but when its running it doesn't look like the water is moveing so I'm thinking either the pump isn't working or theres a tremostat and it isn't opening. Any ideas? Thanks You can also send me e-mails if you want

I don't know this engine at all, but if it has a water pump, it will have a thermostat, It sounds like you've got a bat thermostat. Bad water pumps will leak and spray water all over. Check the 2 hoses for blockage or collapse as well.

Hi, you wrote "Well I've got the compression up now and it runs good"

What is it up to and how did you do that?
I would think by the time the F variant was intoduced, if it had a pump it would have a thermostat as well?

Well the last time I checked the compression it was up to around 90psi, ya thats still not as good as it should be but its a lot better the 55-60psi. I got it up by putting oil in the cylinders and in the exhaust and also spraying PB in the cylinders and letting it sit a few hours. What get me is that it doesn't smoke or use any oil. It does get hot up to 220 yesterday when I shut it back down. I think I may have put the rotor on wrong, its a gear to gear set up so I could only guess how it should be. On the rotor there is a line and on the mag gear there is 2 beveled teeth so I figured that was how to time it but I may have got it one tooth off. By the way RAB thanks

Hi Old,
Sounds like it was sticking compession rings. Oil control rings are free.
Was it running on non-detergent oil? Probably the reason, as rings gum up much more on this type.
If you have changed over to detergent oil, beware - as it is a bypass oil filter system (on the IXB), I believe, so deposits in the engine could find their way to bearings and narrow oilways before the filtration circuit cleans them out.

Not sure what oil was used in it before I got it and I haven't changed it yet. I want to get all the bugs worked out first then change it. When I change it I'll put in 40 or 50 weight Volvoline raceing oil. The engine on it is a model IXF3 2-3/4X4 bore 2405207 this is off a tag on the engine. It has a Wico mag XH 2600 2-01021. I also have a spare engine its an IXB but is missing the back plate of the engine and also the mag and the head is off of it so if I use it I will put in new rings etc first. Thanks again for the info

I have one of those mags on my ixb and i think you have the roter correct. The roter should point at one of the wire lugs right after the impulse trips(might be a little past. When cranking slow the impulse trips at the second mark on the flywheel. When running and no impluse the mag fires on the first mark you come to.
