Burnt by Oliver 1850 (Hydraulic Cap)

Monday, I was driving my neighbor's Oliver 1850 and everything seemed to be fine, but suddenly the cap (which on the 1850 is located between the legs) blew off and shot the hot fluid like a fire hydrant all inside my legs, over the bottoms of my arms, and a little bit in my face. It was horrible.

Does anyone have any idea why it may have happened? The reservoir shouldn't have any pressure in it, let alone enough to blow a vented cap off of it.

I did go and see a burn specialist. The pain is still a bi**h, but he explained all what to do to take care of them. I can see a few sings of my arms getting better, because they were a lot less serious than my legs.

It was the dip-stick cap, where you fill it that blew off. Still not 100 % sure why, but I am also not in the best shape to go out and climb around it to find out either. I think that when ever possible I am going to use the 1855 that has the cap in the rear.

Do you mean the fill/dipstick cap, or the cast cap for the filter? We had the filter cap blow off on our 1555 (luckily in the winter with it only runnig for 10 minutes or so, the oil was just warm) wich has the same cast filter cap as yours. The filter had plugged (the last BARGAIN oil I ever bought), built pressure and gave me an oil bath.

When was the last time the breather in the cap on the dip stick was changed?

Most likely never.

Burns are a living hell!! I am in so much pain. Hard to walk, to sleep, to do anything. Someone else had mentioned possibly being overfilled?

Jon, sorry to hear about your burns! Hope you went to or at least talked to a burn center. I think they can tell you the best ways to handle and minimize the pain! Let us know how you are doing? I'm definitely going to check the vent on my 1650! Thanks for the warning!

If a vessel gets hotter the pressure will increase, unless there is a vent. That vent must be blocked.
Lucky there has not been any seals blown, unlucky for you to find the problem in that way. Hope it is not too serious.
Regards, RAB
