I have a Cockshutt 30 with the narrow front end. There is a worm gear up there that turns a part that goes into the worm gear and then to a shaft that goes down to the wheels. It goes together similar to a PTO shaft with the teeth and grooves. There is a lot of play in the steering and I think that I need to replace the gear that goes between the worm gear and the shaft coming from the wheels. Does anybody know where I might get this part?

I am just guessing that the gear is the part that is worn rather than the shaft. I know usually in a case like this one of the materials is made harder so they both do not wear out. Do you have any experience with this gear and the typical wear?

Thanks again.

I doubt it would be a worm worn but pins. turn or replace pins, adjust sim block under pin plate to take up slop.

There are more areas that might be your problem. The shaft is keyed at the bottom with a square key and could allow the front wheels to flop around when the key gets worn. I replaced my key and also drilled and tapped for about six 3/8 set screws. Their are several tapered pins in the middle gear box that wear flat. Phil has new pins. Drive out the old and replace with new ones. I drove mine out and replaced them turned about 90 degrees and it worked pretty good. Good Luck.
