Just wondering how many of you might have been following the recent events regarding HPOCA. The president has been non responsive to the membership. He promised to answer some questions that have been asked by a group of members,,but so far has ignored repeated e-mails. In view of this, I have decided not to renew my membership. Does anyone else have any thoughts on the subject, and will this influence your renewing, or for those who are not members do you think you will join at this time. Thanks for your input

I had already decided not to renew my subscription to HPOCA. I have not been a long time member, only three years or so, but the way the club is being run cemented my decision. The complete disregard for the membership and the lack of communication from the president or board of directors is inexcusable. I subscribed and am pleased with the Oliver Heritage publication and think Sherry is doing a tremendous job, just as she has done all along.

We may well yet be very lucky that Sherry has persevered, after the apparently very poor treatment by some on the Board, and produced a remarkably better magazine (OLIVER HERITAGE) than the old hpoca one. The way they are going could well result in an even more rapidly diminishing readership, and Sherry will continue as the main Oliver enthusiasts publication.
The only one on the hpoca board who stood up and was counted against the sacking fiasco has said very little also, but he did resign, so as to no longer be associated with the things which have gone on and appear still to be going on.
My membership runs another year yet, but I will surely maintain my Oliver Heritage subscription, but to put more funds in the hands of the hpoca, for what I consider as an inferior magazine, will seriously make me consider my renewal to hpoca.

I will continue to keep my membership. I seem sort of far removed from all of the politics since I live on the west coast. I know there are several unhappy members who seem to have some serious concerns, but if there are rough waters right now, I suggest they don't jump ship, but when the time comes, get a new captain. If there is no change at that time, then mabybe the organization isn't for them.

Also, I enjoy getting the two magazines, the HPOCA and Oliver Heritage. I think they are both very good.

Super 55,
I too am a little distant and I agree with your comments about supercedure (a beekeeping term where the workers produce a new queen to replace a nearing defunct or a poor queen)
However, last years voting slip did not even arrive until after the closing date!! So I was denied a vote anyway. Hope this is not going to happen a second time.
I am not happy with the present 'crew' and, on recent showing, am certainly not happy with them looking after OUR ship with $200k aboard. It is a matter of trust and openness, which is sadly lacking at this present time.
Long live "Oliver Heritage". Sherry deserves all the support we can give her to maintain such a super magazine.
Regards, RAB

Hey Supeer 55, and others...
There may not be much of a ship to sail on if the current leadership gets their way, as I see it.
Think about this and make up your own mind;
Why hasen't anyone stepped up and tryed to quell the unrest in the HPOCA? Like you, I sat by and waited for an eternity for the president to "set things straight". Nobody said a word! Why? Instead there was a member that seemed to be a mouthpiece FOR them. Why?
The bylaws forum has been closed for quite a while as they are being revised. Has anyone seen any of the proposed revisions? Coincidently, the HPOCA donated $10,000.00 to the Museum fund (HPO).Give you one guess who the governing body of the HPO is. Yep, our BOD! Has anyone seen the bylaws for the HPO? I didn't think so. What was the balance of the HPOCA's treasury last issue?
I think over $200,000.00 (of club members money)
There was a list of valid questions sent privatly via e-mail to the president. There was NO response. They were posted on the HPOCA forum, and still unanswered. One member asked them to be published in the HPOCA magazine. The editor stated that He would have to put them to the BOD before printing them. It's my opinion that Sherry was fired because She was loyal to the club members and NOT the BOD.It is also my opinion that the HPOCA leadership has an overgrown ego problem, and they don't care about the HPOCA anymore since they have the HPO tucked away in their shirt pockets. Do you think there will be provisions in either of the bylaws to "slide" $ from the HPOCA to the HPO? My suspicion is yes.
I too did not renew because I felt the president and BOD were treating the membership like a bunch of driviling idiots. I changed my mind in the past week, and will send in my renewall, just because I'd like this to be OUR club, not THEIR club. Larry Coltrin

Joe, I have been thinking about that. Put up a president who will give the club back to the members.

It will take more than just 1 person as president to change the club. It will take members working together, helping guide that president. We must find ways to get as many member's involved as possible. Not one person or group can successfully run a national organization.

There are many members who are qualified to lead HPOCA through these rough times....but involvement by the members is the real answer to solve the problems of the club!!

I too have been watching all of this to see what happens before deciding to join or not. The one thing i have noticed is that it seems that alot of the membership wants a new BOD. Maybe I have missed this as I have not been on the computer as much lately but how many of the memebers thatare complaining are willing to step up and run for the offices? I have seen alo of "We need something new" But not many "I'll try to get in a position to change things".

And I have probably missed a few of those stepping up and if so I apologise for not knowing about you. The BOD is still elected right? or have they changed that also.

No only the president, v.p., secretary, and treasurer positions are elected. The B.O.D. are appointed by the president. This is something I'd like to change. Have the above officers positions elected by general membership and for the rest of the b.o.d. have each chapter elect a representative to fill the directors position,

I guess with me I really dont care about all the top dogs of HPOCA, but Terry seems like a real jerk from what I am hearing, kinda reminds me of my old boss...I do like parts of the magazine, but Sherry's mag is better. I will say that I am pretty disgusted with my local Oliver collector chapter. Seems like the president of the club has very little to offer, and never gets kicked out of office, and that kinda roasts my butt some. Heck, the guy didnt buy an Oliver until the 80's, and now he is a self proclaimed Oliver nut.....whatever! More or less venting on that issue here...I guess I am just a person that likes his Olivers and Whites and wants to be around stuff that interests me, so thats why I subscribe to both magazines. One man and his thoughts, for what they are worth.....

Remember that the magazine is only a part of the club operation. Her magazine is good but she doesn't put one any shows and many other things a club does. Ask for a tresurer's report if you are still interested in the club. Its the most important part of a club and should be available for every member to view.
