The flywheel on my 3150 Caterpillar engine in my 2255 Oliver has stress cracks in it on the clutch side. I don't think they go all the way through. The guy at the local clutch shop said he would surface it and it would be fine. I just wanted some other opinions. If it isn't fine I wouldn't know where to begin to find a new one or how much it would cost. Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Greg

Small surface cracks are normal on a flywheel. Having it turnued will make it like new. The only conern is a flywheel that has been surfaced many times (like a brake rotor) can be weaker than spec causing it to warp, but it would have to have been turned alot (many clutch jobs). Hope this helps, Stu.

The guy at the clutch shop said this flywheel had never been surfaced as far as he could tell. I was just concerned because some of the cracks looked to deep for the surfacing to take out.

I've resurfaced 100's of flywheels and have seen many cracked quite bad. Don't expect the cracks to be gone after machining. The machine shop will (or should) only remove the minimum. And chances are the cracks will remain. The important thing is that the flywheel is not concaved or wavey.
