When I purchased a 550 diesel it had an alternator instead of a generator on it. The wire goes directly from the alternator to the battery. How is the wiring connected to the gauge to determine if the alternator is always charging.

An ammeter is always wired in series with the circuit. Thus a circuit should go from the "B" terminal of the alternator to one side of the ammeter and another circuit from ammeter to the battery terminal of the starter solinoid. Probably the reason it had a circuit directly from alternator to battery is that the original has failed. The original generator produced a low amount of amperage, thus the wire was of a small gauge. The alternator will produce a much higher output of amperage and needs a larger gauge wire. An electrical/electronic instructor always says that all components have smoke built into them. When they fail, smoke comes out. Your wire probably don't have any more smoke in it.
