Has anybody used an NGK A6 plug in a 1550 or 770? Just wondering how in the world you get the thing in (or out) there. The hex is 1" instead of the normal 13/16". Can't even get my narrow wall Snap- on socket between the head and plug. Used the Jap plug in my Harley and had real good luck, thought I'd try it in my 1550.

We have always used AC Delco plugs in our Olivers. Another plug you can try is the Autolite. I have had some good luck with those also.
If you have problems with them fouling, use the 388, it should be comparable to the old AC C88. Otherwise we always used the AC C87 but I think AC is consolidating the plugs in the different heat ranges to just one, the C86. I think the Autolite comparable is the 386.
We have had trouble with the Champions and quit using them.
Make sure if you replace plug wires that you use the copper core or wire core plugs. We have seen a lot of problems with the graphite core plug wires. The old point style distributor systems were not made for the graphite.

I just put in a set of AC 87's this morning since the NGK's won't work easily. It's never run this good before! Fouling isn't an issue anymore since I had the head rebuilt. I've got the Petronix electronic ignition (20 minutes, direct bolt on) on it so my graphite wires aren't a problem. Had the hydrapower rebuilt 2 years ago, did the head a couple weeks ago before baling, thinking about a paint job this fall. I'm getting too much money stuck into the old girl, but she's just the perfect size for what we use her for! I had my eye on a nice G750 Moline this spring, but just couldn't see spending that kind of money since it's one of the "collector's" tractors now.

Jake, I've tried these plugs also. I was told at the auto parts store that they are actually made for the old single cylinder snowmobile engines, that is why they have such a large base. I've had very good luck with them in my Olivers as they are a high quality plug to run in anything. The only problem is the one you mentioned. I believe I used a 1" box/open end wrench and was able to tighten it with the wrench at an angle towards the porcelain. I don't know if that makes sense but if you have a wrench that size experiment with it. We've switched to AC Delco plugs because of the tightening issue with the NGK's. I don't know why NGK can't make the base smaller. We've had good luck with the AC Delco's though. Jeff

Glad to see I'm not the only one having problems getting them to go in! I emailed NGK and was told they only make this plug with the 1" hex. I've got AC's in right now, guess I'll just get another set. I just really like the way they improved the performance of my Harley, thought that they might do the same for the 1550. Thanks for your input!
