Let's talk 2255s. In the months ahead, I will likely have an opportunity to buy a 2255 and I wanted to talk to you folks who have some experience with them, particularly the 3150/3208 engines. It will do some farm work but will also be used for amateur tractor pulling, as the venerable 310s I fear aren't quite up to the task of the 250 hp needed to compete with the tough IH 466 motors I run against. I know I could modify the 310 to do it, with bigger nozzles, custom rods, a block stiffener, and larger turbo, but I prefer to keep them and the tractors stock. Question is, which motor in the 2255 more easily lends itself to 250+hp applications and how do I get there? I've been told that the 3150 has the higher output injection pump, but the 3208 has a larger displacement. Can the 3150 pump be mounted to the 3208 perhaps? Is the bottom end of the 3208 stronger than the 3150 for greater longevity? Can one obtain the power I'm looking for without adding a turbo to make it like the 4-225? And can one make adjustments to increase torque on these pumps like on the Roosa-Masters? Any and all advice appreciated. I've considered looking at G1355s, but the 585MM motor concerns me a bit with only 5 mains. Any advice appreciated. Thanks!

The 3208 and 3150 are identical except for the stroke of the the crank which was changed from a 4.5 to 5 inch stroke. Pumps were made by Caterpillar. They were made up to 210 Hp without smoking. Our 2255 was rated at 160 hp with the 3208 in. Turned it up 2.5 turns on the rack and is around 225hp, and smoke when under heavy load without a turbo. We took the center out of the clutch to prove it, and had to put in a double disc. In marine applications where unlimited cooling was available, they were run up to 350-400Hp. Bottom line is, 300Hp can easily be made with a stock pump and turbo. You might need a different set of nozzles for increased fuel delivery or find a marine 3208 reay to go. They have roller lifters in also which would make a good engine to pull with and parts are cheap compared to the Hercules. Hope this help. Of course all of this is from a Cat man. we farm with 3 tractors powered by 3208's

personally, I would highly reccomend looking a a 2150. if you want to make as much power as possible and make it live a long time the 478 herc will eat the 3150 or 3208 anyday. Cubic inches is not always the answer.

Thanks to all for insight. All things being equal, I would prefer the 478 for its torque characteristics, but 2150s are difficult to find, and usually fetch a premium. I missed out on one for $3000 3 years ago (literally a day late, otherwise I'd have one). I'm still coping with that one. I've toyed with trying to find a repairable 2-135/155 silver stripe, but I haven't had much luck on that front either for the money I want to spend. The 2255s, on the other hand, are more plentiful than the 2150s and can be had in my price range of around $5000. I thought I saw one post on here some time ago about a 2255 owner who claims to have his tuned to 250hp, so that's why I'm thinking 2255 instead of 2150.

The inline pump is also a Cat built pump. Trying to remember but at one time we were given information on pump setting on the late 2255 with the sleeve pump. Don't forget the 225 rating is engine horsepower. I was gone by then, The 2255 is on the low horsepower side of that engine with the 3208 pump. I was also told once and I did not look this up but a new Cat bare block can be built into either a 3150 or a 3208.

Dear WFE,
This has nothing to do with your question, but I am trying to find an engine for my 1950-T. I have been waiting for you to post something because I knew you worked with these engines pulling with them. I am wondering if you knew where I could find a good motor for my tractor. I can't seem to find anything here in Tennessee. If you don't mind please e-mail me back if you could help locate one or know of any for sale. Thanks, Brad

Brad,

I'll be happy to help if I can. Are you looking for a motor that is running that you can simply drop in or a good intact block and parts that you can rebuild? The latter will be easier to find as I can think of a number of places that should have a rebuildable 310 w/cooler block. I always prefer to buy them that way anyway so you can either do all the recommended 310 rebuild procedures yourself or have a shop that you trust do them for you. A 'donor' engine that runs well and is available for sale is always tougher to find; you usually end up buying the entire tractor to use the engine. Email me your thoughts and also let me know if you need an authentic 'T' motor or if a 1955 motor will work. There are a few subtle differences; fewer if you have a late 1950-T with the single precleaner and vertically mounted bypass oil filter assembly. Regards.

Hey WFE, The older 2255s with the 3150 had an inline injection pump. It may have been a Bosch but I can't remember. The 3208 has a Cat pump that also has plungers and a metering sleeve system. I know that it was hard to get much more than 200 hp. from a 4-150/180. I would think that the inline pump could be put on a 3208. No sleeves in a 3208, you could bore it out. I think Cat went to .060 oversize. You need to get down to central Illinois to some tractor pulls. I went to one last year at Charlestown and they had a V-8 class. There were 4 or 5 2255s that pulled and they had them cranking. I think it was a non-turbo class. One of those guys might help you out. WB.
