Filler Plugs/How to lossen?

Greetings!
There are two filler plugs on my David Brown (Oliver 500). Next to the gear shift lever and the range lever/transmission dip stick.

I purchased a manual for the Oliver 500... does not show a filler plug next to the range lever.

In fact, the manual has some misguided information.

Questions:
1) What is the purpose of the left filler plug?
2) How does one loosen the filler plugs? The plugs have a recessed "head?, shaped like a ?square".
Tried to use my socket wrench, but to no avail.

Kind regards,
Herb

Usually, the recessed square hole will be an even dimension, and you can get a short piece of key stock that will fit. I know for a fact that the rear axle key for a MM 4 Star fits the transmission fill plug of an IH 504 perfectly :o)
