I have an Oliver 77 that has hydraulics on it. the reservoir has the control valves in it plus an electrical connection on side of hyd. reservoir. The origional levers are long gone but there is a peice of metal welded on to one side. I have lift and lower but takes a long time to raise or lower the corn planter it takes engine power to expand or contract cylinder. Has what looks like some kind of flow restrictors on both lines that enter the hydraulics. I have to stop and waite for planter to raise and then waite for it to lower at each end of the field. What is wrong with these hydraulics anyway? What can I do to speed things up? And the other question is, what does the serial number say? 328182C - 77 - D . Thanks, Jerry

These older Oliver systems are slow speed even when they are in good mechanical shape. In my part of the world it's not uncommon to see large late model 12 and 16 row planters starting and stopping at each turn around for the same reason....lack of high enough gpm hydraulics.

328 182 is the serial number. C-77D is the code for the ring & pinon combination. I go by memory Your tractor is a late 49 or early 1950 model. Now your hydraulic unit also has a serial number stamped on it. I would like to know what it is. It is stamped near the gear shift. Also do you have a "toggle switch" with a brass handle mounted on the steering collum? Those things you are refering to are restrictors. The swivels on each side look alike, but the restrictor is only used to control the rate of drop of the cylinder. The other swivel should be empty. You may need to double check that. How large of a a cylinder (inside diameter) are you using and will it pull the engine down if the cylinder is taken out of the planter and just laid on the ground so to speak and then cycled? Is this a double or single unit hydraulic system? In other words are fittings comming out of both sides of the unit? Questions?

J. schwiebert, Thanks for reply, The unit is double unit system, right side has 2 fittings coming out and left side has one fitting and a pipe plug in the other hole. That side looks like the had a vise grip attached to the control shaft at one time. The number just ahead of shift stick is 15966 stamped in good and hard. I did not see any marks on steering column where something would have ben attached. The controls come out of the side of resivoure down low. And the cyl . is about 2 1/2" or 3". And it seems like it needs engine power to move the hyd. cyl. in either direction. (I know if you are going to displace oil it requires a certain amount of force.) This unit has a 6 pin electrical connector.
