I have read Sheps web page about cummins conversions, but I am pretty much dumb when it comes to cummins engines. Can someone give me a crash course in cummins engines? What are the different model #, and the differences between the models? Are the bt models the only ones that fit olivers?

There are lots of different model numbers in the Cummins family and I have seen quite a few different ones in tractors. I guess any of them "can" be used for a repower, but not all of them are as easy as others. It really depends on how difficult of a conversion you want to do and how much you want to spend. I have seen Iveco, onan, yanmar, perkins and all kinds of Cummins engines in olivers, and all are done differently, but they all worked (in some degree).

The most popular conversion is the 6B or 6BT Cummins engine, because it is the easiest to convert, is a super tough engine and puts out good power and balence to the tractor. You can also use a 4BT in the 16xx trators and get along well, but it does through the balence off a little. I talked to a guy today that is putting a 3.3L Onan engine in a 1655, and I will be very interested to see that conversion when it is done.

Dont know if I answered any of your questions or just created more confusion, but the simple answer is you can probably put any engine in the Oliver tractors given enough time and money....

One of the more popular Cummins engine used in Oliver conversions is the 5.9. This is the same engine Dodge uses in their p-ups. There is a lot a person can do with the 5.9 to increase horsepower, bigger fuel pump, marine injectors, etc...

My younger brother works in a Cummins shop and knows just about every way possible to get all the horses out of 'em possible. He's been beggin me to put a big cummins in an Oliver. I'm a MACK man myself, maybe we'll have a Cummins Oliver and an Oliver w/ a puppy dog on the hood!
Mack before Volvo!!!!!
