77 lazy starter

My 77 gas has the original 6 volt electrical equipment. Even with a fully charged 6 volt battery, the motor makes a turn about once every 5 seconds. When I boost it with a 12 volt battery it spins like crazy and starts immediately. What might be the problem? I'm thinking about replacing the battery cables because I read an article in YT archives suggesting this. However I have my doubts whether it is battery cables. I've never replaced cables on any battery operated vehicle I've owned. I'm interested in your ideas.

The fellow with the 8 volt suggestion has a good option. By changing to an 8 volt system you can keep it original. You use the same parts with exception of the battery. This gives you the extra boost at a fraction of the cost and is easy to do. If you're worried that the cables might be bad, then have a new negative made. It's not that expensive either. You could have you're starter checked out if that isn't the cure.

Thankyou for the help. I think I'll try new cables before a new battery. When you say try a new negative cable first, I guess you mean the one going to the starter given that 6v are positive ground systems. Would you confirm that that is what you meant or did you mean to start by replacing the positive ground cable?

The ground cable, the positive one. Farm supply stores sell them by the gross, no need to have one made. About $5.00
