I have a Cockshutt 30 (probably 1950 model) and I'm not sure if it's a 6 or 12v. I put a 12v batt. on it to test the starter and ignition but I don't know if I can run a ballast resistor w/ a truck battery or will I smoke the generator? I don't really want to pay $160 for a converson kit, I'd rather buy a new battery. Thanks to everyone who helped me fix the ignition. I changed the coil to a blaster 2 and cleaned the points (set gap at .028). The kids and I are excited to hear it fire for the 1st time in 20+ years.

Rob,
All Cockshutt built Cockshutt tractors used a positive ground system. All model 30 gas tractors were factory equipped with 6 volt systems. The distributor point gap should be set between .018 and .022.
Please let me know when I can assist you further.
