The front wheel on my 550 cants outward at the bottom. It digs into the dirt when I turn that direction and will push gravel to side when going straight. Is this a problem with the king pin? How big of a job to fix?

The wheel should set straight up and down. This has nothing to do with toe in. No doubdt you have the 3 piece axle. Do you have the wheels set in or out toward the maximum? Are the bolts holding the outsides good. The axle should be straight. Also there are busings in the housings. Jack up under the tractor frame so the wheels clear the ground and then grad hold of each wheel and shake it back and forth. See if you have a lot of side play which would make the wheel cant out at the bottom. There is also a thrust bearing at the bottom. If this bearing has failed it will make it steer harder too.

With a toe in of 3/16" the left tie rod should be 2and9/32 inches longer than the right. With this adjustment done properly a very noticeable ease of steering will be achieved.I have found that most of these Super 55s & 550s have been tinkered with by individuals that have no manuals at their disposal, and are therefor way out of adjustment. Then all you hear is how "hard steering" they are.

There are no king pins on the 550. Turn the steering wheel till both pitman arms are in the same position then the lenght of the tie rods can be checked and adjusted if need be or might be bent. Tie rod ends can be checked for wear by jacking up the front. Also if anyone has removed the pitman arm from the box could be mis-timed.

Thanks very much for the replies. I'll take a look at the tie rods. Thanks again.

You are correct. In the parts manual they are called "knuckle and shaft".For a person without a manual it would be easy to refer to them as "king pins".Curt seems to have been barking up the right tree.
