This is my 1st attempt at restoring a tractor. It's to the point where I'm ready to fire the engine but can't seem to get any spark, even at the coil. I have 12v on both sides of the coil (new coil too). I don't want to tear into the distrubutor as there is a rivited plate under the rotor keeping me out. I assume there are points in there. Anyone have any ideas as to what I should do next?

You need to get to the points just off that next piece under the roter. If you remove the dist.end of the wire between it and the coil.you can then ground that wire on and off and the coil should spark.

Rob,
The no spark problem is probably the rotor or the contact points set. Shine up the end of your rotor and contacts inside your distributor cap. The cover directly under the rotor will pop off. The rivets simply holds the two pieces of the cover together.Remove the entire cover as one piece. Note, there is spot were the cover notches on the edge of the dist. housing. You may have to use penetrating oil around the edge on the distributor housing. Gently, tap up on the cover to remove it. Shine up the points and set the gap at .020 or at least between .018 & .022 or replace the set. I have all these parts on stock if you need the points and or the condensor.

Most distributers run on 6 volts. 12 volts will fry your points and probably ruin the condenser. You need a coil with a resister built in or a resister between the coil and switch. Just my opinion.

No sparky; File and clean off the point surfaces alcohol, (nothing worse than a light oil film and current discharge arcing), make sure all fasteners are clean and tight. Start you rig and go to work. Good luck.
