This engine was an option in the 1850. Does anyone know what block it was? Listed as an Oliver 384, but did Oliver really make it or did they buy it?

You mean the 354. It's a Perkins engine, there are several variations/ models of 354 over the span of time, and parts, from what I understand, are not interchangeable. The Perkins will not fit in a Waukeshaw tub, and has a different bell housing as well. The 1850 is the only Oliver to have the 354, but a later version came back in the White 2-85 and 2-105. The 2-105 is turboed while the 1850 and 2-85 were naturally aspirated. There are also other brands with the 354, such as Massey. They used the engine in their combines, and also a few tractors. Hope I helped

According to a book I saw, the 1850 had 3 engines, the gas 310, the diesel Perkins 354 and an Oliver diesel 384. I had an 1850 with a Perkins and am familiar with that engine, but am not familiar with an Oliver 384.

Never heard of an engine other than the 354 and the waukeshaw gas in the 1850. The only thing I can think of is that Waukeshaw's were made in a joint effort between the 2 companies and were listed as Oliver engines. Can't say I've ever even heard of a 384. What book was it?

I know quite a bit about Oliver engines and I also have never heard of a 384. Only ones I know of for the 1850 are the 310 and 354. Maybe a bad typo??
