Wondering if anyone could help with the vintage or model of this plow that was originally a 4-14, but has been converted to 3-14. I'd type more, but it's getting late. If ya'll have questions I could relay more. Thanks for any insight!

Sorry guys, I was going to try and fiddle with the links, but am not motivated enough. You can find the pic over at help identify. If you're not any more motivated than me and don't check it out that's understandable. Thanks.

Neil

Looks like a 5440, should have "619" series bottoms.

I have Operating manual and setting up instructions for No. 5540 and 5760 Moldboard plows, Semi-mounted. It shows pictures of varies semi-mounted plows from 4 to 8 bottoms. the 5540 model goes up to 6 bottoms, thats the one we had. These are the early semi-mounted plows from Oliver, were called the round beam plows because of the round main beam. My book shows a 4 bottom as the smallest because that is the shortest round beam. If your plow was convered from 4 to 3 bottom I'm thinking some one has cut off the round beam or there is another group of smaller plows. the book shows the 5760's as 7 and 8 bottom plows.

With some help from those that posted above and one kind gentleman that contacted me via email I have determined that it is a 5440. Yes, someone has cut off the round beam to convert it to a 3 bottom - me. My uncle owned the plow before me and hit a stump with the back (4th) bottom, tearing it up pretty good. Dad and I had a 1550 that was better suited for a 3 bottom and I mentioned that it might be nice to convert the plow to 3 bottoms (since the 4th was in bad shape anyway) and use it behind the 1550. So my uncle said I could have the plow if I wanted to take on the project, which I did and got 1st place at the county fair for.

Of course that's been a dozen or so years now, I've left the farm for the big city, we sold the tractor to my Grandmother (who's farm my uncle operates), and I gave the plow back to my uncle. I did get to drive a bit over the memorial day weekend though, when I visited home, which is when I took the picture.

By the way, I would be interested in the manuals or copies thereof.

Neil

If it's similar to the frame of our 565, it is a 4 bottom backbone, but you can make it a 3-bottom by removing the front beam.
