I recently bought an Oliver 77. I was trying not to, but when the owner said he would take $300 and deliver for free, I decided to take a chance. It is complete and was running recently ( supposedly ), so I figure there have to be enough good spare parts to recover the sale price. I would like to give this old tractor a chance first, but I don't know where to start. I'm not even sure if it is stuck or, if so, how to check for that. The only things I know is: 1) The previous owner put in new plugs, distributor cap, rotor, starter. 2) The battery needs to be replaced. 3) The oil in the crankcase is really milky; obviously a good bit of water got in there somehow.
Anybody with ideas as to how to proceed, please let me know. Thanks for the help!

Drain the oil, remove the pan , fill the rad and try to see where the water is getting into the sump. pressurise rad to normal pressure to help if necessary.
Or, change the oil and get it started to see if it runs anything like it should (no knocking, normal oil pressure etc) and go from there.
Or, docompression tests etc to assess whether it is a major rebuild job, or what.
Hope this helps

RAB -- Thanks for the advice! I think we discussed this tractor a while ago ( but I could not find that posting in the archives ). The owner was originally asking $1,000 and based on description, you had warned me away from this one. I didn't want you to think I totally ignored your advice then, but when he came down that far on price and offered to deliver, I figured it might be worth the gamble. Wish me luck! Glenn
