Oliver 550 gear shift boot question

I recently purchased a new rubber boot to go on my gear shifter for my 550. The problem is, how do I get it on? The obvious solution would appear to be to remove the gear shifter knob, but I have tried to turn it and it is not budging. Any suggestions from those of you who have been there before would be appreciated.
Thanks

i don't have a 550, but on my 770's to remove the knob, i wrap it with 6-8 wraps of heavy 1 1/2 electrical tape, then 1 layer of red shop rag, then very carefully turn COUNTER CLOCKWISE with a channel lock pliers. they come right off, and the grippers on the pliers don't chip the knob. good luck ron

without wandering over to the garage to check, I'd guess like most shift knobs that are threaded on, there is a locknut that needs to be backed off a little to get the knob loosened. if it's pressed on, start tapping gently. This isn't much help, just cause I'm too lazy to walk out to the garage.

Good luck

My 1958 550 does not have a shift lever knob.. . where can I get one? It does, however, have a Cone Automatic Machine backhoe mounted on it and a dozer-type front blade.
