I just bought a 1975 550 and havn't got an operators manual yet, and I want to change the transmission oil. What grade and number oil do I use? And is the motor and transmission the only oils to change? Also what is the right muffler for it, a Nelson or Stanley? Thanks for any help. Mark

The hydraulic oil in the transmission cover has a filter and requires 8-9 quarts of 10 W 30 non addive oil. This is drained by removing the pipe plug on right front of the trans cover, screw a 3/8 pipe nipple and lenght of plastic tubing them start the engine, the oil will be pumped out but stop the engine when empty to prevent damage to the pump. This chamber is seperate from the trans and engine

Do not forget to check the hydraulic fluid with the dip stick to the right rear of the seat. Go to TSC. They have the fluids in bulk sizes. Like J. Schwiebert said, use the 80-90 gear lube for the tranny. You can get it in the 5 gallon bucket, which is great, because your tranny will need 5 gallons.
As for mufflers, go to www.korves.com. He has the right muffler (Stanley) at a great price, and he charges you exact shipping...not that scaled shipping and handling method a lot of places use based upon the cost of your order.

The book calls for SAE 5W-20 year around if temperatures fall below O F. otherwise use SAE 10w-30. Mix 1 quart of 102 082 A Oil additive with each 4 gallons.

True, but you have not been able to purchase the additive in years. 80-90 Gear oil will work fine unless you are in extreem cold temperatures.
