Generator bad?

I put a new voltage regulator on the 880 generator and the amp light stays lit. I was advised to disconnect the wire from the F post of the generator, run the tractor at fast idle, short F to ground and see if it pulled the tractor down with the charging load. It did not.

Are there other good tests to run on a generator?

It sounds like someone told you wrong. You should polorise the system by touching the A and B momentarily with a wire. That stuff with the F post is for an autolite negitive ground system, you should have a delco positive system.

I did polarize it. The amp light stays on. How do I know if I have a bad generator or a bad voltage regulator?

If that is a Delco generator then you ground the F (field) terminal to full field the generator.

If it is good then it will show the maximum charging rate at reasonable engine speed. That tells you the gen is good.

That leaves the regulator or wiring RT

I tried this and got no change in engine RPM or other indication of a load.

I mentioned this to a friend who told me it worked for negative ground generators but positive. Me? I know nothing and will believe anything. I took it to a competent shop and they are going to check it out for me.

It sounds to me that the generator is bad. I don't claim to know all the generators out there, but certainly the Delco's on Oliver tractors check this way.

For a comparison, the Ford car and truck generators I have seen from the early 1960's are checked by jumping the armature and field together.
