When I try to engage the PTO it grinds and will not go in gear.

If I engage the PTO when the engine is not running, the PTO works fine when the engine is started.

Is there more to engaging the PTO than just pulling out the lever or is something broken?

Thanks!

You need to use the clutch?
If, like most David Browns of that era , it will have a two-stage clutch.

Thanks RAB,

I tried the clutch and felt the first position when the clutch is half way depressed, but, while trying to engage the PTO it still grinds and won't engage.

The PTO engage lever is just above the PTO shaft, and you pull it out to engage.

Am I missing something or is something broken?

ok to engage the pto push the clutch all the way down. when you let the clutch up to the step postition the pto will operate but the tractor will not move. letting the clutch further up will set the tractor in motion. So if you are mowing and push the clutch down to the first stop the tractgor will stop and the mower will turn.
Good luck Ron

Thanks Dick and evielboweviel,

My Oliver 500 is a 1960.

I have tried engaging the pto while the engine is running with the clutch fully depressed and it just won't go. There is so much grinding and I have not tried to force it real hard.

Like Dick, if I engage the pto when the engine is off and then start the tractor the pto works.

Any other ideas?

Thanks!!

ok I understand better now
Don't have a book on this or much experience on this model. I have been told the clutch relase fingers have to be adjusted just right. along with other adjustments. So only thing I know is to find a book or get a copy off of somebody and adjust it properly. You may have to split the tractor to get to the clutch to adjust it properly.
SORRY can't be of more help
Ron
