Hello all; I'm visiting from the Ford N-board and had a question. I'm working on a 1948 Long Model A (somewhat rare) but it uses the same rear end as the Cockshutt 30 and the E-3. When I pulled the rear wheels off, I found that I can wiggle the axle in and out about 3/16". I'd already pulled the rear PTO cover and sealed it back up and was wondering if there was anything I can do to take up this play externally, such as removing the hub and shimming? Any advice you can offer on rear end adjustments will be appreciated. This will NOT be a working tractor, it will be a museum piece that will travel to shows and things, so it will need oil and we can't have that oil leaking back out! Thanks.

Jeb

Your best bet is too open rear again and tighten nut on inside against bull gear. If you can get the hub loosened to pull it chances are you will create more problems like worn splines. most of the time you can not gain any more from the hub end. Sorry not what you wanted to hear but would be your best fix. Irv

Is tightening that nut all that is required or do I need to get shims of some sort? Also, since grease is leaking from around the outter collar, are there any seals or o-rings that I can get to stop those leaks? Thanks!

Jeb

the splines on inside will only allow you to tighten nut so much if there is still to much slop then most likely bearings and or cone are worn badly. the hub does have a large seal behind it that normally runs around $30 but again the hub can be a bear to pull. Some I have had to pull whole axel and have them pressed off. good luck and you can email me if you need more info Irv
