Clean out gas tank

I bought a tractor that had sat with gas in the tank for many years. The passage into the sediment bowl is gummed up and I'd appreciate any advice on cleaning it out.

I thought of removing the sediment bowl holder, but it is too small for a 3/4 and too big for an 11/16, and stuck so hard I'm afraid to put a Crescent wrench on it.

I tried blowing air in it from the sediment bowl side but that doesn't work.

Could I put some lacquer thinner in and let it sit overnight? I tried to run a wire through it but it is offcenter from the filler hole and I didn't want to take the float out, so I can get a wire in the hole but not far enough to penetrate the goo.

Would really hot water work? Maybe the soap spray from a wand car wash?

Thanks for any hints.

I used some muratic acid to clean my gas tank out. If the tank has very much rust in it , it will have holes then. Mine turned out ok. I rinsed it with baking soda afterwards. A final rinse with lacquer thinner worked great. Rick

I had the same problem. The sediment bulb will have to be removed. I took the tank off and used lye and got some of the varnish out and used laquar thinner to get some more. Then acitone to get some additional but their is still some in it. I used a short piece of pipe with a fine screen rolled in it that stickes up in the tank about 4 inches and attached the bulb to the short pipe. I seems to have stopped the big particales that were pluging the line.
