bought tractor and the pto turns fast without my mower hooked up but turns real slow when hooked up what can i do?

Try adjusting the PTO clutch (you should get a manual that explains the process).If that does not solve the problem the PTO clutch will need to be replaced.Try typing "PTO clutch adjusting" in the search box of this page,as this subject has been addressed here before.

I am not real familar with the 550 but I would adjust the clutch first it might be slipping some and adjusting it might be the only problem. Also if the pto is hydrolic driven you might have a seal out some where or the pump is going out. If it has a three point and it is still working fine your pump is probabily ok. I am just now putting a 1650 back together that had a similar problem and it was the pump. Good luck and I hope I helped.
