Looks like your help is needed on the Farmall board. (Shep, you have already been referenced by 26Red.)

Hello! Back in the mid '90's, we re-powered three Farmall tractors with 6B5.9 engines: an 806, an 856, and a 686. A 4B3.9 would work quite well in a Farmall M, 400 or 450.

Good to hear from you Merlin. I thought that you had done some IH conversions.

While I have your and Shep's attention, I have a question. Have either of you seen or tried the Cummins B series Tach drive? I wonder if you could drive the Oliver tach off the Cummins parts and not use the Sun Tach?

Nope, I have never even seen that. Looks kinda interesting though. I wonder if you can use the origional Oliver tach or not though, I dont know what the ratio for the Oliver tach is.

Personally I like the electric tach's, they show the "true" hours that the tractor runs. I have used the Isspro ones and the Murphy ones, kinda like the Murphy tachs better myself, but they both work.

Neat idea though.....

I am getting some new "shoes" put on two of the tractors today. Cant wait to get home and take a look at them. Putting 20.8 x 34 Goodyear radials on the 1850 Cummins and 18.4 x 38 Titan Radials on the 1655 narrow front with the 283 Waukesha. That should really change the way they look and drive. Now if I dont break the coupler chains with those big tires I will be in good shape..... .

All the Cummins engined Olivers I have seen have the original Oliver tach. I like the way it looks. I have worked on that 806 that Merlin in St Louis talked about. It has a 1486 clutch in it. Hey Merlin, why did you guys put a turbocharged and aftercooled engine in that 806? Did John Timm want it that way or was that the only engine available? Its almost too much snort for that tractor, but I do like the power.

Thanks Shep. It would be neat if the Oliver tach worked with that kit.

If the wife sees that tire bill, you'll have more to worry about than broken coupler chains. ":^)

No doubt.... That is an easy way to lose $2500 in one evening. They do look really good though, I will have to get some pictures when they get into the field, it really changed the looks of those two tractors. The 1850 looks really mean now..

Hey, that is pretty cool. I have never tried to repower an IH with a Cummins before, but I am sure it can be done. I know my neighbor bleeds IH red, he has 6 or so red ones, and they are decent tractors. I ran his 986 doing some brush hogging last year and it is an OK tractor, didnt care much for the ride though, I am spoiled with my Oliver's ride comfort.

Correct me if I am wrong, but dont the newer CIH tractors like the Maxxium, Magnum, and MX series tractors run the 8.3L and 5.9L Cummins engines??? If that is the case you should be able to use parts from those tractors to make the Cummins fit into the older ones. Kinda like what I do with using the White 120 Workhorse parts with a factor 5.9L Cummins to fit into the Olivers.

Just a thought, I dont have any plans to try an IH anytime soon..... ..

I'm not sure on the newer CIH tractors. All these newer tractors look the same to me. If you painted them all purple, I'd be hard pressed to tell who made which. Not much individuality anymore. IMHO.
