I attempted replaced the brake linings on my 1650 this weekend. However, the outside cover wouldn't tighten down. I slipped a used disk on the outside and the cover tightened. But, that braked locked tight. I called my local dealer's parts man and asked about the shims behind the housing. He said leave them alone and add shims to the outside cover?? I said there aren't any? He there should be and most likely were thrown away over the years. But, my parts book shows only the inside shims. Who is right? I put washers under the cover per his suggestion. Anybody have any others?

Make sure your brake ajustment is backed off all the way if you are installing new linings

I had the same problem on my 1850. The other fellas are right. You need brake cover shims. This one is off an 1850. The 1650 shims should be similar.

I had one shim and AGCO wanted to sell me new ones at $18 a piece. I bought $6 worth of sheet metal scraps and made, several, of my own using my one shim as a template.

HTH and good luck!

The inside shims are to adjust the ring and pinion LEAVE IT ALONE as the parts man said. I have used outside shims. E-mail me or call 712-324-2760

Depending on what parts book you have it may not show the outside shims. That was a "field fix" and a good one. It give you better and more brake action. The inside shims adjust back lash and bearing cleanaces. Leave them alone!
