I cant get the Pto to disengage on my 550. Also it seems the speed of the pto has sped up somehow. Am I crazy or is this possible?

Hey Pat, Your pto control lever has an adjustable stop that holds the lever far enough forward so it isn,t lightly engaged. You should be able to stop the slowly turning shaft with the pto shaft of the implement you are trying to hook up if this is the case. If it's stuck on full time full poweer, I don't know anything about that unless it has a disconnected linkage. It is a geared arrangement so it's speed should follow the engine rpms. Good luck

Please kill your engine while hooking up PTO drive shafts!!! If the lever to PTO is disengaged, he can turn the outputshaft by hand to align. If it won't turn and is stuck through the clutches, the acessory will start running when the motor is started. When I was young (40 years ago) a guy got a shirt sleeve wrapped around a turning shaft and it like to did a complete rolling amputation of his arm. It was turning slow, but not slow enough. Safety first, last and always!!

I was describing a diagnostic test, not a lifetime habit. No one should grab or hook up to a rapidly turning shaft. Having your baler or mower start up as the engine starts is a recipe for disaster. However, If your tractor pto is working properly it will be shut off when the lever is in the off position. We should work on answering the question at hand, instead of sniping at people who are trying to help. So, let's have a discussion about who shuts off their engine as well as the pto for every hookup and removal of pto equipment.
