I am looking for a 60 or 70 Oliver built in 1947, same year my father was born. Beyond the available records that I've seen used to list serial numbers for a given year, is there any way to determine the actual "build date" beyond taking the # built in 47, dividing that # by 12, and getting close in that manner. Obviously there are a number of factors involved in getting the "right number" and wondered if any of you folks may have more information to get me where I need to be. Thanks in advance for your help!

Your method is probably as close as you can come. There are not any existing records as to build dates on that old of tractor. Another method is to look at the numbers on the side of the engine crankcase on the 60. There are three rows of numbers, the lower row is the date that the crankcase was cast in Charles City. That casting was machined in Charles City, then sent to Waukesha Engine Company in Waukesha, Wisconsin for assembly and returned as a completed engine for installation in a tractor. There are also casting dates on the bottom of the transmission, to give you some idea of when it was built.
