Missing Hyd oil

I had a cracked hydraulic hose and bad o-ring on the hydraulic flow control valves under my 1850's seat for most of the winter. I changed them out last month and added about 10 L to the hydraulic tank thinking I would be good for a couple of months, but noooo... I have added yet another 15 liters of hyd oil in the past two weeks and I can not find a significant leak to account for the fluid loss. Can Hyd oil leak into the transmission gear box if a shaft seal has failed? I had thought that the pan under the pump would prevent any hyd oil from getting into the gearbox but I am running out of places to look. I even rode in the bucket while my wife drove to see if I could spot a leak from the streering mechanisum. Nothing but normal seeps and drips common for a 35 year old tractor underneath.

Neighbor had an 1800 with the same problem. Rear axle bearing had gone out, and the bull gear wore a hole in the resevoir.

All you have to is check your transmission oil and see if it is over full. If it is bingo you know where it went.

I had this problem on a 1555 which I believe is set up the same as the 1850 . Three possible causes : (1) hole in the hydraulic oil pan ; (2) breakdown in gasket which seals the pan to the top - there is an area in front of hydraulic oil filter but before gear shift where a bad gasket could allow hydraulic oil to leak from reservoir into the transmission ; (3) bad front seal on hydraulic pump . You drain the gear oil for the transmission and rear end on this tractor in two places , (1) a recessed pipe plug (1/2 drive ratchet with no socket will fit in plug ) underneath the transmission right beside the pipe plug which allows removal of the screen to the transmission oil pump and (2) a recessed pipe plug underneath the rear end . If I recall correctly the plug under the rearend is directly above the draw bar so you have to swing the draw bar right or left to get to this plug . Remove both plugs and drain the fluid from the transmission and rear and and I am pretty sure you are going to have both hydraulic fluid and gear oil mixed together . I would have several five gallon buckets ready because if hydraulic fluid is mixed with gear oil in the transmission and rear end you are going to have a lot of fluid there .

A guick way to test which of the three causes it MIGHT be is to leave the plugs out , put clean buckets underneath each plug hole and then add some hydraulic fluid . If fluid leaks into the front bucket underneath the transmission , it is more likely a bad gasket or the front seal on the hydraulic pump . If fluid leaks out of the rear hole (under the rear end ) it is more likely a hole in the hydraulic oil pan . If you get no leaks with the tractor off , it is most likely a bad seal in the hydraulic pump which is only leaking when the pump is turning . ( However , on my 1555 the leak was the seal on the hydraulic pump but it was slow leaking when the tractor was off , not when it was on - go figure that one ) . My guess is you are going to have to take the top of to figure out and correct the problem .

Sam 1750 series and up if equipped with a 3 point have the dashpot rod as Larry suggested. 1550, 1600 and their replacements do not use that set up.

Yes hydrolic oil can get into the rear.It can leak out the pump seal or through a crack in the pan or the seal if you have the dashpot push rod through the pan.open the filler leval plug on the rear to find your oil.
