am in the process of tuning up the 550. Replaced the ignition with the Genesse Products ignition 1 year or so ago along with the 12 volt conversion kit.

Wondering what heat range plugs people are using, and what gap they have settled in on.

NAPA book shows a D21 plug...had been running D16 Champions. Genessee suggests no more than a 35 gap and Autolites.

any input would be appreciated.

Jeff

Jeff, Sorry I can't answer your question but you raise a question for me. I was told that the 550 never was 6 volt, I am in need of a battery and was about to buy a 12 volt. Is the 550 a 6 volt or 12? I would appreciate your insights as I am new to the 550. Thanks Allen

STICK WITH THE CHAMPION "D16" @ .025" GAP--YOU DON'T WANT TO GO TOO HOT, BECAUSE YOU MAY BURN YOUR VALVES RIGHT OUT OF IT. OF COARSE DEPENDING WHAT YOU'RE USING IT FOR. CHECK TO SEE HOW HOT THEY ARE FIRING, IF THEY ARE FIRING A BLUE SPARK, YOU CAN'T GET ANY HOTTER THAN THAT..... ....

What are you talking about?
The heat range refers to the running temperature of the ceramic insulation cone and therefore the centre electrode in particular. Using a grade which is too hot is likely to cause pre-ignition (leading to engine bearing failure, among other thongs) and may cause plug parts to be dropped into the engine.
All plugs should fire with a blue spark. Any other colour is a reflection on the ignition system condition.
