I picked up a 770 this winter and have been doing some repairs on it in my spare time. I've changed the fluids in it except the rear end. I thought I would loosen the drain plugs to see if there was any water in the bottom and out came 90 wt that was gray from all the moisture in it. My question is, what oil should I replace it with. The owner's manual (original) says to use 10-30 with an oliver transmission additive. Should I put 90 back into it, use 10-30 or use a modern Hy-Tran type oil which is probably closer to a 10 wt but has transmission additives in it?

Check with someone like wrenchbender who has a more up to date listing, but when I left we used 80-90 and had less problems than with the 10W-30. The 102082a (I think was the part number) additive has not been around for a long time. However this almost being 40 years later a lot of improvements have been made in oils and additives. Your hydraulic transmission fluids were developed for the larger flow hydraulic systems because you did not have a reservoir large enough for the space you had a vailable. Remember your C-model 1800, 1600 and later Olivers had a hydraulic oil cooler to aid in this maner.

OK , here it goes again. The book says to use 10W-30W motor oil due to the high speed gears in the transmission. The lubrication for the high speed gears is not sufficient enough useing 90W gear oil. Yet , I've known people , including myself , who have used 90W gear oil for years with out any problems. The gears they are talking about are the ones you sometimes have to wait for , in order to put the tractor in gear. Now , if you have the "Power Booster Drive" , you must use 10W-30W motor oil. Now-a-days , the additives are already in the oil when you by it off the shelf. So don't worry about the additives. I use 10W-30W in my Oliver "770". It has power booster drive.

Thanks Scott, I think I will flush out the transmission and use the 10-30. The seals on the brake stub shafts are leaking and 90 weight makes a mess in the brakes, so I've got the new seals and will install them, then install the lighter oil.
