I recently purchased an 1850 with the 354 diesel. It has 5400hours and smokes very little. When it is idling it will stall with a slight load such as turning the steering wheel or starting with any load. It also doesn't maintain engine speed when going up a hill.Does this sound like a governor problem? Also are there any ajustments that can be made or should I leave it to a diesel technician. Any advice would be appreciated. Dave G.

Mine does the same thing and I have worked on others with the same problem. You are right with it being the governor. The CAV pumps tend to wear out alot sooner than other makes. Many times a person is just as far ahead to replace it as to rebuild it.
The governor is inside the injection pump and requires at least some disassembly. Probably a job best left to a professional. You might get lucky and it might be some of the external linkage. Worth a try tightening some of it up.

Thanks for the imformation Chris. On the left side of the injector pump is a hex shaped shaft next to a large plastic disc. Is this some sort of ajustment? Regards Dave Gardner

Any adjustments that I know that can be made from the outside of the pump are on the right side where the linkage hooks up. Some times the linkage gets a little worn and loose. It's probably an internal problem, but checking the external linkage is worth a try.
Good luck, Chris
