I need some help. I have a 1600 that is using alot of hydraulic fluid. It uses about a gallon an hour. My father in law says he thinks something is leaking inside the housing under the seat and the fluid is filling up the rear end and then leaking out onto the ground. I was hoping someone has had this problem before and could tell me how to fix it. Thaks, Bill.

I had this problem on a 1555 only it was leaking hydraulic fluid down into transmission gear oil mainly when the tractor was off . Near as I could figure , there are three ways for this to happen : (1) a hole in the hydraulic oil reservoir pan ; (2) gasket between pan and tractor top is leaking ( there is an area in front of the bell shaped hydraulic filter cover but before the gear shift where if the gasket leaks fluid will go down into the transmission ; and (3) front seal of hydraulic pump is leaking . My problem was number 3 (and fluid was leaking down when the tractor was off ) . I removed the pump , bought a seal kit and had a local hydraulic shop rebuild the pump . Fixed the problem .

First question: Does the oil leak away when the tractor is not being used. If it does then is probably is as medowgreen stated. If not and leaks only when the engine runs, the front seal is out in the hydraulic pump. Now rule of thumb on front seals on gear pumps is that the reason for the severe leak is the leakage internaly in the pump is so great that is forces the oil past the seal. It has to go somewhere. In other word the pump is worn past acceptable limits. It will still pump but the pump output GPM & PSI will be below acceptable limits.

The pan under the hydraulic unit most likely has a hole worn in it. This will drain your system into the rear end. Not a big job to replace.

Thanks, I will fill the tractor back up with hydraulic fluid and let it set for a day or two and see if it leaks down. If it doesn't and it needs a pump can the pump be rebuilt? If not where can I get one cheap, I checked with several tractor supply places and the cheapest one I could find was around $400.00 and that is out of my price range right now. Again thanks for the help!!
