I'm looking for some opinions on what to check or what might be the culprit. My 1755 diesel has A LOT of blue diesel smoke while running. Not so much that I can't see but you can follow the tractor around the field just by the smoke trail. Current hours are 6350, owners manual says it was rebuilt at 3850 hrs. Thanks!

You asked. I have questions for you. The first one, how hard do you work it? Second one, Does the operating temperatue come up to normal (with no load on the engine), Next, how does it start? Next has anything been done to the fuel system lately, How much white smoke do you have when you try to start it? Enough for now.

Currently the tractor doesn't get worked hard at all. It's smoked for years, but I just bought it. Before I got it..it was worked pretty good.

Temp comes up into the normal mark with no load.

Their is a conseridable amount of white smoke while cranking, if it's cold or hasn't been ran for a while. Other than that the tractor doesn't start too bad...when it's warm out. Today it was about 40 degrees and I had to plug it in. Once it was warm it started almost instantly.

I haven't done anything to the fuel system lately. It was ran dry before I got it, so we had to bleed the injectors before it'd run. I've got new filters, just waiting till I'm done degreasing the engine before installing them.

Like I said you are either short on compression, that is why you need to plug it in or your injection nozzles may not be breaking up the fuel as fine as it should be. Next thing, take the exhaust manifold off, start the tractor and see if the white smoke comes evenly out of all 6 cylinders. If not, rotate the injection nozzle from a cylinder that does not to the one that does. Use two wrenchs to remove the line, hold one turn one so you do not break the nozzle. If the miss stayed with the cylinder you have a compression problem. If it moved, get the injection nozzles checked. Most likely when they overhauled it and if they ground the valves and seats the valve recession became out of spec. and most likely a full set of 12 valve seats will need to be installed and maybe a few valves too. Questions?

Thanks for the input! I'll try pulling the manifold and see if it's puffing equally or not. If it's the injectors any idea on what they cost? Should it be a loss of compression, how bad will it be for the engine to be ran? Nothing hard, making hay etc.

Instead of taking the manifold off, just do it the old farmer way. Start the tractor cold, hold your hand on the exhaust manifold at each port, you should feel a temperature differece at one port compared to another port if there is one or two injectors that are bad or even if there is a valve out. At least you can narrow it down to the cylinder that is giving you the problem. Keep it at an idle while doing the test. Just a suggestion, I do it all of the time.

Thanks for the advice. I checked it this afternoon and #4 isn't getting warm like the others. I know it's a dumb question but how do you remove the injectors? Are they like automotive injectors, just remove the lines and the bolt holding it down then they pop up out?
